The meat has a rich, clean taste that doesn’t feel overly greasy, allowing the caramelized onions to shine through with their natural sweetness. Yak meat’s firm texture also makes it ideal for burgers, providing a satisfying bite without being dry.

Who doesn’t love a juicy burger? Yak burgers are a fantastic way to enjoy this exotic meat in a more familiar form. The caramelized onions add a touch of sweetness that complements the natural richness of the yak, while the homemade burger patty is juicy and flavorful without being overly fatty.

Ingredients:

1 lb ground yak meat
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp olive oil
4 burger buns
Lettuce, tomato, and your favorite condiments
Instructions:

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground yak meat, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Gently mix until everything is incorporated.
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and form them into burger patties. Make sure the patties are slightly larger than the buns as they will shrink slightly during cooking.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside once caramelized.
Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the yak burger patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Because it is leaner, take care not to overcook the burgers.
Toast the burger buns on the grill or in the skillet for a minute or two, until lightly crispy.
Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on each bun, topping with the caramelized onions, and adding lettuce, tomato, and your favorite condiments. Serve immediately.
